Pest Control in the Fall

Fall is here in the Cincinnati area, we all start to slowly head indoors to escape the cooler weather.  We unpack the warmer blankets, clean the fireplace and take the tarp off of the firewood so that we can get ready to sip hot chocolate sitting by a roaring fire.

The downside is while we are all heading back inside, so are a few unwanted guest we would rather keep outdoors. Rats, mice, cockroaches and some spiders also seem to find their way in during the fall months.  Extermital has come up with a few tips to help you keep these unwanted pest outside.

• Make sure that all screens and vents are sealed. Check any openings on your chimney. Check mail slots and pet doors.
• Moisture attracts pest. They need it for survival. Make sure that your basement, attic and any crawl spaces are dry.
• Walk around the exterior of your home. Check for any cracks or crevices. Seal them with caulking or use steel wool. Remember, mice only need an opening the size of a dime to enter your home. Be sure and check around any plumbing pipes, vents etc.
• Don’t leave any food around where insects can feed. All they need are crumbs. Put all opened food in sealed containers. Make sure no pet food is left on the floor. Be sure and clean well after every meal.
• Check weather stripping around doors and windows. Don’t leave any openings where roaches or spiders can enter. Replacing your weather stripping will also help with your heating and cooling bill not letting heat escape. Make sure you keep firewood at least 25 feet away from your home.
• Make sure you’ve had your annual home inspection from a qualified professional.

These are just a few tips to help keep control of your home during the fall and winter months.
